Neil,
I have talked with many, many antique and vintage sled owners, including Charlie V. and the president of the Antique Snowmobile Club of America. Everyone I talk to want a one time registration for vintage and antique sleds. Read all the posts in this thread as an example. Most asked why MSA doesn't work towards this for the vintage/antique sled owners. MSA's position is that MSA will support and help get any proposal introduced into the House and Senate that they come up with. I told them that we needed at least two individuals to work with MSA that can speak for the two groups to draft up a proposal that meets their wants. I do not believe there is any organized structure in MI. for either of the groups. I would think that this would be a great opportunity for the groups to get organized and we can all work together as a team. So far no action that I am aware of.

GREAT NEWS!!

This past weekend at the Novi Snow Show I met with Bernie Reid, from Ortonville MI. Bernie has agreed to represent the Vintage Snowmobilers On a committee to work on the one time registration. Bernie can be contacted at: 248-627-3898. Also in past conversations, John McGuirk, president of the Antique Snowmobile Club of America has also agreed to be on the committee. John can be contacted at: 937-493-0719
Any of you that have ideas about the one time registration for antique and vintage sleds should contact either John or Bernie with your ideas. The committee will be made up of Bernie, John, Bill Manson of MSA and myself. We will try to get together before the end of Dec. for the first meeting.

That's great to hear! I hope something does come of this. I think the 25 year old rule will be good - same as cars.
Although we must make it easy for the system to work. I work for a company that makes over $10 billion a year and our system is still DOS based. To switch from registrations to titles may be an issue and too much of a change for the system (although it would be very nice and probably the correct way). I would hope there may be something easy in the system to make the registration a one time fee and permanent until the sled is sold again - just like when trailers were changed to a one time plate fee. This way, only that one small system change. We know it can be done since trailers did it!
Cuurent year minus 25 = one time registration fee. So if the sled isn't at that point yet - it needs a rege every 3 years until it reaches that current year minus 25, the the system swaps it to a one time rege. Done

I know my friend got puled over at TUT. No registration / no trail permit. A 1970 Nordic and it was the one ride he took on the sled from one side of the lake to the other. Got a ticket for no registration. Let em go on the trail permit since he was on the lake. Yep - it was more than he paid for the sled.

I believe it is true, there still needs to be a fee for using the trail whether you are on an old or new sled. Even though it should be a small amount of time that the old sled is on the trail. I know I'd be unhappy getting into a town on my current sled that the trails are beat up from a "vintage run" of sledders with nothing they paid toward the trail grooming. Or if I was riding and needed to get around a pack of 30 old sleds. It probably wouldn't be that big of deal but someone else put it correct by saying there needs to be some sort of fee. Maybe they buy one trail permit for their sled and as long as it is considered "antique" by the registration then that trail permit is also permanent, no matter what year is on it......Something easy for the system. So if you get pulled over with a 3 year old trail permit - all you do is show your registration that the sled is "antique" and it shows you're legal - the trail permit is good for that sled.

Can anyone chime in that knows for sure what the other states are doing - and if they run a trail permit. Thanks. I hope to see more responses on what is happening on this subject. I would love to get the old Olympic out on a run!!!!!

The first meeting of this committee is scheduled for Dec. 15th. I would suggest that anyone with comments or concerns should call John or Bernie. Their phone numbers are just above this reply.

Ref Vintage/Antique Sled Registration Project.

I am involved in this project too, and will be posting similar threads on several other websites too. If anyone has a suggested website that would be of value- please post with the website address I am going to post on vintagesleds.com in the bullsessions after our meeting next week- so we can have some specific talking points and options.

Myself, Bernie Reed, John McGuirk and Roger Jordan are all meeting next week with Jim Dickie and others from MSA regarding this topic.

Thanks to all that have responded so far. Some great feedback. Keep it coming.
