Kinda late for this year... But maybe for next Dec or January's magazine article do a piece on how to handle an injured snowmobiler. Many times each season people are brought to the hospital on snowmobile or via personal vehicle and the injured parties have internal injuries not visible to anyone else.
One of the most common is a ruptured or lacerated spleen . A person can bleed out from such an injury. I think it was 2 years ago now , but a gentleman was up snowmobiling here in the UP.. Crashed his sled was thrown and landed hard. He went back to his cabin told his friends he wasn't feeling good and loaded up and went home. They found him deceased in his bedroom, from a ruptured spleen.
Its very important not to move anyone who's been in a snowmobile accident. Making sure they are kept warm, immobilizing the head and neck from moving until professional help can arrive. The EMS providers all across Michigan are trained to handle these types of injuries and most have some sort of rescue equipment for trail extraction.
Both the EMS and the all new 911 Snowmobile trail locater system here in the EUP , would be good topics to communicate to the snowmobiling public.

I like your idea Tim but non of us are qualified to write a story like this and we would of course want it correct. If you know of anyone (yourself included) or a couple of people that could work together to create an article like this I would think that we would make every efort to get it published as a saftey article. Let me know what you think, blwood@chartermi.net

I would be happy to help and will enlist the assitance from our seasoned EMS in our area... Just need to know when it would need to be done for Dec or January issue ? Problem with doing an article now is the season is almost done and most wont retain the info going into next year...
